2005 San Marino Grand Prix Race Report

An edge of the seat final 10 laps between Fernando Alonso in the Renault and Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari, disaster for Raikkonen and McLaren, a messy race for Massa for Sauber and more reliability problems for Barrichelo at Ferrari.

Alonso wins again!

Alonso made it 3 wins this season after winning at Imola but only just. Schumacher was right behind him within 5 tenths for around 10 laps but the Spaniards amazing defense held off the 7 time world champion in his Ferrari.

Amazing comeback drive from Schumacher!

Michael Schumacher's mistake in qualifying left him just 13th on the grid for the race. On the opening laps, he struggled to make his way through the field and by lap 12, was a whole pit-stop behind race leader Fernando Alonso.

After the pit-stops however, after staying out longer than the rest, Michael achieved a monster overcut as he jumped from P12 to P3 on lap 27 once he had pitted. By lap 42, Shumacher was within a second of Button and on lap 46, the German found his way past thanks to the 2 Williams backmarkers fighting in front.

On lap 51, Schumacher was within 5 tenths of race leader Alonso but after 10 laps behind him at this gap, he was unable to find a way past and had to settle for second place.

Disaster for Pole-man Raikkonen

Raikkonen did an excellent job to put his McLaren on pole for the 2005 San Marino Grand Prix and had an excellent start over P2 Alonso. But after just a few laps, he was forced to retire with a suspected eletrical issue.

A messy race for Massa!

Felipe Massa was behind David Coulthard in the Red Bull and on lap 16 he went for the move but lost part of his front wing and lost out on the position and was forced to pit to replace it. Then on lap 36, Massa found himself behind Coulthard again and went for the move once more at the same corner but once again collided with the Red Bull but this time made the move stick.

Another reliability problem for Barrichelo

Barrichelo and Ferrari have already had reliability problems this season and they occurred again as he was forced to retire again on lap 48 with a eletrical problem.
