Ayrton Senna: King of Monaco

This years Monaco Grand Prix is the next race in this years calendar, and it would be a perfect time to look back at the ‘King of Monaco’ , Ayrton Senna.

Ayrton Senna has won the Monaco Grand Prix 6 times in 1987, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993. Senna raced at Monaco 9 times and won 6 of those.

In 1988, when Senna was leading the race by 55 seconds ahead of title rival, Alain Prost, he was on course for what would have been his second win at the street circuit. However, he suddenly crashed his McLaren at Portier at the entrance of the tunnel.

On Senna’s Monaco debut in 1984, Senna finished an impressive second place in his Toleman and in 1986, he achieved another podium. In 1987, he finally won his first Monaco Grand Prix, the first of 6 wins.

Graham Hill and Michael Schumacher have won at the principality 5 times and at the time, it seemed no one would beat Graham Hills record 5 wins at Monaco. Despite this, Senna equalled this in 1992 and got his 6th win and a record 6th win in 1993.
