F1 are set bring in a new rule in 2023 which will require the drivers to use a specific tyre compound in the different stages of the qualifying sessions.
In 2022, as well as the new regulation changes, we also saw a slight change to qualifying as in 2021 and before, whatever tyre you set your fastest lap on in Q2 (if you finished in the top 10) you would start the race with that same tyre. However this year, it was removed.
The F1 commission also agreed earlier this week to trial the reduction of tyre sets from 13 to 11 for a race weekend. F1 plan to have this take place at 2 race weekends next year where this new revised qualifying format will be used.
It was decided that the drivers will receive half the amount of soft tyres that are usually available to them on a race weekend as they will only have 4 instead of 8. As well as this, 1 more Medium and Hard sets of tyres will be available to the teams.
One of the biggest changes that has been decided on is drivers will be required to use all 3 compounds in qualifying. The drivers will only be allowed to use the hard tyres in Q1 when it is dry and if they progress to Q2, they are allowed to use the medium compound tyre. If they progress to Q3 (the final stage of qualifying) they are allowed to use the soft compound tyre.
The statement released by the FIA and the F1 commission after the meeting was they wanted “to evaluate the impact of the reduction in tyre allocation on track-running, with the overall intention to move to more sustainable use of tyres in the future.”
