Writer's picture: James TownleyJames Townley

Josh Mason is a 20 year old British racing driver who is competing in the Euroformula Open championship for the 2022 season and is currently 4th in the championship with Cryptotower Racing. Mason has competed in BRDC British Formula 3 (2018:20th, 2019:12th, 2020:16th) and EuroFormula Open (2021:9th-2022:4th*)

The first questions I asked Josh Mason was what age he started Karting and what his first car championship was. Josh started karting at 14 years of age and competed in British Formula 3 as his first championship.

In 2021, Mason made the switch to EuroFormula Open after 3 years in British Formula 3 and I asked him what the transition was like between racing in 1 country to racing in a continent. Josh explained "the transition from British Formula 3 to EuroFormula Open was quite difficult due to Covid. However, I liked the transition because going to different race tracks in Europe which I have been watching on TV as a kid, to finally race on them was amazing."

Josh Mason's best results this season so far have been at Monza as he achieved a 1st and second place finish and I asked him if this is his favourite track. He said "Monza is an incredible circuit as it is really fast. I also enjoyed the hungaroring and Imola as I won my races there as well. But I really enjoy Spa Francorchamps as this is up there for one of my favourite tracks." Josh has had 2 wins so far this season and got a podium at Spa Froncorchamps.

As Mason is British and has raced in British Formula 3, I asked him if there was a track in the UK he would like to race in a EuroFormula car. He revealed "Silverstone without a doubt. I tested a EuroFormula Open car around there but do one day get a chance to race Silverstone in this particular car would be great and a lot of fun."

Many drivers are inspired by F1 drivers or what they have done for the sport and when I asked Josh Mason if there was anyone who inspired him, he said "my inspiration is Lewis Hamilton as he has helped to make the sport diverse, and also due to how good he is as a driver, and his success he has had in the sport." Sir Lewis Hamilton is doing a lot off track to work with Formula 1 to make the sport diverse.

Finally, my last question to Mason was "what is your ultimate goal in racing/motorsport?" He revealed "my ultimate goal is to make it to the pinnacle of motorsport, which is Formula One. Also to stay there as long as possible, but also as a racing driver to become world champion one day."

Thank you again to Josh Mason for letting me ask those questions!
